Plasma

PDF

Plasma televisions are probably the best solution for a dedicated home theater.  Especially rooms that don't get much light.  A plasma display is comprised of hundreds of thousands of cells filled with different gasses such as neon, xenon and argon.  Given a certain charge, these gasses will light up and together create a unique color for each and ever pixel on the television.  The following are what you should be looking at when deciding on which Plasma to purchase.

Size

If you're looking for a small television (something smaller than 40"), you'll need to look at an LCD instead. Plasma televisions range from about 42" all the way up to an astounding 100" and probably higher now.

LCD

For most typical home theater setups, an LCD is probably going to be a better choice compared to a Plasma.  Without getting too in to the technical side of how an LCD works...  Basically, the crystals within each pixel are twisted and based on how much or how little they are twisted a certain amount of light is let through.  These crystals don't actually emit light, so they require a backlighting of some sort.  Originally this was just done by fluorescent (not the same as regular house/business fluorescents) lighting and still are.  The more expensive models are now using LEDs (more on these below) to light up the crystals. There are quite a few different things to look at when choosing which particular display you'd like to purchase.

Size

Pretty much any size you would like is available with an LCD.  Starting as small as 19" (maybe even smaller)

Speakers

You know what speakers are. Audio comes out of them. Simple.

What audio comes out of them? Well, that depends on what you are listening to. If you're just listening to music, you'll only get sound coming out of the front left and right speaker, unless you change the audio setting on your receiver. But that's a whole different subject. Otherwise, if you're listening to a movie or tv show with surround sound, you'll have audio that is going out to all of your speakers.

  • The front left and right speakers are generally for what you see on the sides of the screen or even off the screen to the sides somewhere. It could be something as simple as someone talking, someone's footsteps or it could be a jet flying from one side to the other of your screen.
  • In the front center of your setup, usually directly below your television is your center channel speaker. This is the most important speaker as generally 80% or more of the audio you hear comes from this speaker. This is what you see happening in the middle of your screen, and is usually the main focus of what is going on in any scene. The conversations that are generally difficult to hear while watching tv are usually that way because of either not having a center channel speaker or because your center channel is of really low quality.

LCD vs Plasma

Print
PDF

This seems to be a pretty well debated topic.  But really, they are both exceptional options that have different advantages over the other.  For the most part, whichever one you decide to go with, you'll be very happy.

If you just want the short version, go directly to the third page.

Size

This is usually the first thing that someone looks at when deciding what television they want.  You may just want something small and inconspicuous.  You may want to get the largest one possible.  Or maybe you have a very specific space based on furniture that will only allow a certain size television.  Knowing the size television that you want will greatly reduce the choices available to you and may even eliminate LCD or Plasma as one of the options.

  • Small - It's pretty simple.  LCD televisions start at a much smaller size.  As little as 19".  Maybe even smaller.  Plasma on the other hand tends to start at a much larger 42".  So if you need something maybe 40" or smaller, Plasma just isn't going to work for you.
  • Medium - Between the 40" to 65" sizes, both LCD and Plasma televisions are extremely competitive and knowing only the size won't really help too much with your decision between the 2 types of televisions.
  • Large - Above 65" Plasma gains the upper hand.  LCDs become quite a bit scarce.  Plasma televisions are much easier to make at larger sizes and already have multiple models shown by companies over 100".

Receivers

PDF

Usually considered to be the heart of anyone's home theater setup. I would have agreed until somewhat recently. With the introduction of computers have a place in one's home theater, receivers in comparison do little. They still do a lot, just not nearly as much work as the computer can.

As Plex is the software hub for all of your media, the receiver is the hub for all of your home theater hardware. The only reason you wouldn't use a receiver is if you are simply satisfied with stereo sound from your built-in television speakers and your television has enough inputs for whatever you want to connect to it. Otherwise, a receiver is used to connect all of your devices to it so easily switch which one you will be watching and listening to. With one simple remote selection you can switch between your Computer, BluRay Player, XBox 360, Playstation3, Wii, Radio, Satellite Radio, CD, MP3, etc. The receiver will then output the correct components video (if available) to your television and the audio to your choice of stereo or surround sound speakers.
